In the old days you would go to Las Vegas and stay in a hotel with a really cheap room rate and free buffet but somehow lose tons of money at the casino. Now you can stay in a luxury RV resort and, after you lose some money, come back and swim in a fantasy pool, play golf or watch TV in your air-conditioned RV. Full hookups.

It's a 3-day drive from San Diego to Yellowstone - maybe 2 if you have several drivers and very patient passengers. Do yourself a favor and make this trip when you have a couple weeks or more to devote to it. You will be driving right past Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon in Utah, so spend at least a few days there if you can. Of course, you should make reservations in advance for Yellowstone, especially if you are in an RV longer than 30 feet, since there are a limited number of larger RV spaces in the park. Large RV sites are located at Flagg Ranch, Fishing Bridge RV Park, West Yellowstone and Gardiner; Fishing Bride is the only one with full hookups. Make reservations by calling 307-344-7311 or 1-866-439-7375. Prices range from $12 to $35. As with most popular national parks, private RV resorts close to the park entrances offer greater amenities for a higher price, and farther away from the action in the park.

Zion National Park is at least a full 8 hour drive from San Diego, including through some hot, flat desert. The two campgrounds in the park have non-hookup sites and are first-come, first-served, so you must arrive early to have a hope of getting a space. RV's must have an "escort" through a narrow tunnel if arriving from the east. A number of private campgrounds around the park, from basic to ritzy, have hookups and other amenities. If you can find a campground with a shuttle or near public transportation, you won't have to pull up camp to drive the RV into the park.
